In short: Nutrisystem delivers portion-controlled, ready-made breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks that follow what the company calls a high-protein, lower-glycemic approach designed by dietitians. You choose a structured weight-loss plan (food for 5 or 7 days a week), a specialty plan such as high protein, menopause or low carb, or individual meals. A 2015 review found Nutrisystem led to at least 3.8% more weight loss than control at 3 months, but longer-term evidence is limited. Prices started at $1.99 per meal for individual items and $99 for promotional specialty plans on the company’s homepage captured on 2026-09-25.
InstaTuck does not sell Nutrisystem and there are no affiliate links on this page. It is information only. Before changing how you eat, especially if you have diabetes, kidney disease or take medicines that affect blood sugar or blood pressure, talk with a licensed doctor or registered dietitian and get checked.

What Nutrisystem is
Nutrisystem has sold weight-loss food online for more than 20 years and is now a division of Wellful, Inc., which also owns Jenny Craig. In 2026 its homepage describes “bringing together Nutrisystem and Jenny Craig” and lists both brands under weight-loss plans. Meals are chef-prepared in USDA-inspected facilities, flash-frozen (some items are non-frozen) and shipped by FedEx, usually within 1 to 5 business days, according to the company. Most meals are heated in 3 to 5 minutes.
How the plans work
Nutrisystem's five steps
- Pick your goalWeight loss, healthy eating, or a la carte meals.
- Select your planA structured program or a flexible meal option.
- Choose your mealsPick from 100+ dietitian-designed meals and snacks, or take the chef's picks.
- DeliveryPortion-controlled meals shipped to your door on auto-delivery.
- Track resultsUse the companion app and nutrition guides.
- Structured Weight Loss Plan: Nutrisystem breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks 5 or 7 days a week. On the 5-day version you add your own meals on the other days. Plans include a “special first week”, Hearty Inspirations high-protein dinners, personalized nutrition guides, the companion app and coaching support. A Partner option covers two people in the same household.
- Specialty plans: High Protein (meals with up to 30 g of protein), Menopause (a protein- and fiber-rich plan the company says can reduce symptoms) and Low Carb (options with under 25 g of net carbs).
- Healthy Lifestyle and a la carte: individual meals and snacks through a Club Advantage membership, which requires auto-renewal.
For the first week, the company says that to lose “up to 7 pounds” you must follow its first-week guide, eating one Nutrisystem breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner each day. The company’s own testimonials note that the expected average is 1 to 2 pounds a week, which is a more useful number to plan around. Claims about menopause symptoms are the company’s; our menopause and weight guide explains what the evidence says.
What the food looks like: calories and protein
Nutrisystem lists nutrition for each item. Sample items featured on its homepage in September 2026 show that most meals are between about 150 and 430 calories, with protein ranging from 4 to 30 grams:
| Item | Calories | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey bacon, egg and cheese muffin | 160 | 11 |
| Farmhouse breakfast bowl | 180 | 12 |
| Grilled chicken sandwich | 210 | 13 |
| Beef taco bowl | 240 | 17 |
| Bistro-style chicken alfredo | 370 | 30 |
| Chicken and red rice grain bowl | 430 | 20 |
Calories per item and grams of protein, as labeled by the company. Check the current label for each item.
Source: Nutrisystem homepage menu examples (Internet Archive capture, 2026-09-25) (checked on October 6, 2026)
Several items carry a “GLP-1” label on the menu; the page does not explain the criteria. If you take a GLP-1, protein and fluids matter even more; see eating on a GLP-1 and use the protein calculator to compare these numbers with a daily target to discuss with a dietitian. Snacks and desserts, such as a chocolate lava cake (150 calories, 4 g protein), are part of the menu.
What the research shows
Independent evidence for Nutrisystem is short-term. The 2015 Johns Hopkins systematic review of commercial programs found that Nutrisystem produced at least 3.8% more weight loss at 3 months than control, education or counseling, and called the results “promising” while noting that additional studies of long-term outcomes are needed. Compare that with programs that have 12- to 24-month trial data, such as WeightWatchers and the earlier Jenny Craig program.
Whatever the program, the step that needs a plan is the transition back to cooking and choosing food yourself; our meal replacement guide and meal prep guide help with that step.
What it costs (dated)
Nutrisystem’s site blocks automated reading, and its plan prices load inside the page, so we recorded what the company’s pages showed in Internet Archive captures. Confirm the full price at checkout.
- Individual meals: “starting at $1.99 per meal”, based on the lowest Club Advantage price for individual meals and snacks (September 25, 2026).
- Offers (September 25, 2026): specialty plans “starting at just $99” (described as saving $45), or 20% off weight-loss programs plus free shipping, for new customers on the first auto-delivery order only.
- Partner plan: the company says the Partner option saves an additional 15% for two people in the same household.
Weekly costs for full structured plans were not readable in the captures. When comparing, count the food you will still buy for the days or meals the plan does not cover, and see our costs hub. The IRS generally does not let you count diet food that replaces what you would normally eat as a medical expense, so do not assume HSA or FSA funds apply.
Auto-delivery, the 7-day guarantee and canceling
These terms come from the company’s pages (program page captured June 12, 2026; homepage captured September 25, 2026):
- Auto-delivery: with the first-order offers, you are automatically charged and shipped your plan every 2 to 4 weeks unless you cancel. One-person plans ship every four weeks; Partner plans every two weeks.
- Cut-off: changes or cancellations must be made by 6 p.m. Eastern the day before your order begins processing. Once processing starts, the order cannot be changed or canceled.
- Early cancellation charge: if you cancel after the first 7 days and before paying for your second plan shipment, the first-order auto-delivery discount is charged back; the June 2026 program page put this at $125. There is no charge for canceling after the second shipment, and prepay options can be canceled without the $125 charge.
- Money-back guarantee: if you are not satisfied with your first order, call within the first 7 days for a full refund. It applies to new 4-week plans, first order only, and excludes the Partner Program, Club Advantage, a la carte orders and some specialty and club plans.
- How to cancel: by chat on the website, by email or by phone, per the company’s FAQ. Ask for a written confirmation.
Who it may suit
Nutrisystem may suit adults who want convenience and portion control, are comfortable with frozen and shelf-stable meals, and like having some flexibility (the 5-day option, or adding their own fresh food). It may suit less well people who cook for a family, have food allergies or follow a special diet (check every label), want long-term trial evidence, or want medical supervision. Nutrisystem does not prescribe medication; for that route see our medical weight loss guide or telehealth programs guide.
Alternatives to compare
- Jenny Craig: Wellful’s sister brand, meals under 300 calories, with coaching.
- Optavia (now Trilivy): lower-calorie meal replacements with a personal coach.
- WeightWatchers or Noom: app-based programs with your own food.
- A high-protein diet planned with a dietitian.
See the full programs hub, or compare routes in medical vs commercial programs.
