Key takeaways

  • Women eating two frozen portion-controlled entrees a day lost 5.6 kg vs 3.6 kg in eight weeks at the same calorie target.[13]
  • A program with prepackaged meals and counseling led to 7.4 kg average weight loss at two years vs 2.0 kg with usual care.[16]
  • Factor, CookUnity, HelloFresh and Sunbasket each offer a lower-calorie menu of about 550 calories or less per serving.[1]
  • FSIS issued an October 2025 public health alert covering two HelloFresh Ready Made meals made with recalled spinach; no illnesses were linked.[11]

In short: The meal delivery services that suit weight loss best show calories and protein for every meal and offer a calorie-capped menu. Our top three are Factor (prepared meals with a Calorie Smart menu of about 550 calories or less and a GLP-1 menu, from about $11 to $13.50 a meal), Trifecta (macro-labelled prepared meals averaging about 350 to 550 calories, shipped to all 50 states) and CookUnity (chef-made meals with exact calories and protein and a 550-calorie-or-less filter). If you like to cook, Home Chef, HelloFresh and Sunbasket have calorie-labelled meal kits from about $8 to $10 a serving.

We research; we don’t test. Every menu, calorie line, price and delivery area below is company-stated, read on each company’s own website on October 6, 2026. Prices change often, and several services show different prices by plan size, ZIP code and promotion, so treat them as ranges and check at checkout. We also searched USDA and FDA recall notices. Nothing here is sold by InstaTuck, and the order never depends on commissions. Services that prescribe medicines are not on this list; see our programs hub for those.

Does meal delivery help with weight loss?

Portion-controlled meals take two hard jobs off your plate: deciding how much to eat and counting what’s in it. Several randomized trials found that people given prepared or portion-controlled meals lost more weight than people choosing their own food, at the same calorie target:

Weight lost with portion-controlled meals vs self-selected foodValues in kg

Foster 2013 (6 months, type 2 diabetes)7.3 kg2.2 kg

Rock 2010 (2 years, free prepared meals + counseling)7.4 kg2 kg

Comparison groups: self-selected diet at the same calories (Hannum), diabetes education (Foster), usual-care diet (Metz) and usual care (Rock). Different trials and programs; not a test of any service below.

In the 2004 study, 60 women ate the same calories either with two frozen portion-controlled entrees a day or from self-selected food; the entree group lost 5.6 kg vs 3.6 kg in eight weeks, and more fat. In a two-year JAMA trial of 442 women, a weight-loss program with free prepared meals and counseling led to 7.4 kg average loss vs 2.0 kg with usual care. None of these trials tested the services on our list, and most came with counseling, but they show why calorie-labelled, single-portion meals can help. The catch: you still have to keep the weight off once deliveries stop.

The 10 best meal delivery services for weight loss

How we ranked them, following our meal-delivery order: first, calorie and protein transparency (nutrition shown for every meal); then portion control (single servings or a calorie-capped menu); then menu range for different diets; then price per meal; then delivery area. Prepared-meal services come first because each meal arrives already portioned; meal kits follow, because portions depend on how you split the servings.

Many people mix the two: prepared lunches for workdays and a kit or two for dinners at home. Whichever you pick, the label on each meal, not the brand, tells you whether it fits your day.

Food safety checks

We searched USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and FDA notices from 2024 to 2026 for every service. Two items came up, both linked to the same supplier, FreshRealm. On October 6, 2025, FSIS issued a public health alert for ready-to-eat meals containing recalled spinach (possible Listeria), including two HelloFresh Ready Made meals shipped directly to customers; FSIS said they were not linked to any illness. On June 17, 2025, FreshRealm recalled a “Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo” sold in Kroger and Walmart stores, which was linked to a Listeria outbreak; it was a grocery-store product, not a Home Chef meal-kit delivery. We found no 2024-2026 notices for the other eight services, though a search can’t prove none exist. Keep delivered meals cold, refrigerate them on arrival and follow the use-by dates.

How to choose a meal delivery service for weight loss

  • Look at each meal’s label, not the menu name. “Calorie Smart” and “GLP-1” are filters, and meals inside them still vary. Our calorie calculator helps you set a per-meal target.
  • Aim for protein. 25 to 30 grams per meal is a useful target in higher-protein diets; Factor, Trifecta, CookUnity and BistroMD all flag high-protein meals. The protein calculator estimates your daily need, and our high-protein diet guide explains why it matters.
  • Prepared or kit. Prepared meals arrive portioned, which is easier for calorie control. Kits are cheaper per serving and teach cooking skills you keep, but you must split servings evenly.
  • Match your eating pattern. Most services offer keto, vegetarian and Mediterranean-style menus; see our guides to the Mediterranean diet and keto, or compare them in keto vs Mediterranean.
  • Count the true cost. Add shipping, minimum orders and the price after the first-box discount. Several services auto-renew weekly; check how to skip or cancel.
  • Check sodium. Prepared and kit meals can be high in salt, which matters if you have high blood pressure.
  • Confirm delivery to your ZIP code before you sign up; Sunbasket and Factor, for example, do not ship to Alaska or Hawaii.

Using meal delivery without depending on it

  1. Start with lunchesReplace the meal you most often grab on the go.
  2. Read and learnNotice what a 500-calorie, 30-gram-protein plate looks like.
  3. Copy at homeRebuild your favorites with groceries and a kitchen scale.
  4. TaperCut deliveries gradually so the habits stay when the boxes stop.

What we left out, and why

  • Freshly, Fresh N Lean and Methodology: their websites were offline or parked on the day we checked.
  • Diet-to-Go, Snap Kitchen, Territory Foods, Daily Harvest and Splendid Spoon: we could not read current prices, delivery areas or full nutrition on their own sites. Daily Harvest mainly sells smoothies and bowls rather than full meals.
  • Blue Apron and Tovala: we could not confirm per-meal nutrition labelling on their sites today.
  • Jenny Craig: the program is operating, with ready-made meals the company says are under 300 calories, but prices were not shown on its site. See our Jenny Craig page.

What meal delivery can’t do

A box of meals doesn’t change your appetite, your snacks or your weekends, and it ends when the subscription does. It works best as a bridge: a few weeks of easy, labelled meals while you learn portions and build habits, as our guide to the calorie deficit explains. Pair it with a kitchen scale to copy meals at home, keep the most filling foods on hand, and plan for maintaining weight loss from the start. If convenience is the main goal, a meal-replacement shake costs less per meal. More ideas are in the nutrition hub, and our Nutrisystem page covers that program in depth.

If you are on a GLP-1 medicine, smaller, protein-forward meals fit a smaller appetite; our GLP-1 diet guide explains what to look for. A “GLP-1 menu” is a food filter, not a medical program.

Questions to ask a professional

  • What calorie and protein target per meal makes sense for me?
  • Do I need to watch sodium, potassium or carbohydrates with my health conditions?
  • Would prepared meals or cooking lessons help me more long term?
  • How should I plan meals once I stop using a delivery service?

Frequently asked questions

What is the best meal delivery service for weight loss?

One that shows calories and protein for every meal and offers a calorie-capped menu. On our list, Factor, Trifecta and CookUnity ranked highest; Home Chef, HelloFresh and Sunbasket are lower-cost meal kits with calorie-labelled recipes.

Do prepared meals help you lose weight?

They can. In randomized trials, people given portion-controlled or prepared meals lost more weight than people choosing their own food at similar calorie targets, mostly with counseling as well.

How many calories should a weight-loss meal have?

It depends on your daily target. Many services cap lower-calorie meals at about 550 calories; a calorie calculator can estimate your daily needs, and a clinician or dietitian can tailor them.

Are meal kits or prepared meals better for weight loss?

Prepared meals arrive pre-portioned, which makes calorie control easier. Meal kits cost less per serving and build cooking skills, but portions depend on dividing servings evenly.

What does a GLP-1 meal menu mean?

It is a food filter, usually for smaller, protein-forward meals. It is not a medical program, and meals inside it still vary, so read each label.
