Best picks
10 rowing machines researched by use case: air, magnetic, water and connected rowers, with user limits, footprint, storage, memberships, warranties and recalls. Checked October 7, 2026.
Key takeaways
- Maker-stated user limits on these 10 rowers range from 250 lb (Stamina X Air) to 500 lb (Concept2 RowErg) and 507 lb (Aviron Strong Series).[1]
- Stationary rowing is rated 5.0 METs under 100 watts, 7.3 METs for general vigorous rowing and 11.0 METs at 150 to 199 watts, so one rower can grow with you.[14]
- None of the 10 brands has a CPSC rowing-machine recall; iFIT recalled about 44,800 NordicTrack NTRW19147 rowers in October 2025 because the console could overheat and ignite.[16]
- Memberships change the real price: Peloton classes cost $44 a month and Echelon Premier $39.99, while the Concept2, Sunny, Merach and Stamina rowers need no paid app.[12]
In short: For most homes, our top researched pick is the Concept2 RowErg ($990 to $1,155): a 500 lb user limit, air resistance you set with a damper, a frame that splits in two for storage and no membership needed. On a tighter budget, the Sunny Health & Fitness Premium Smart Magnetic Air Rower (SF-RW5940SMART) ($540) has a long 52.6-inch rail for taller rowers and folds upright, and the Merach Q1S ($250 to $360) is the smallest and cheapest pick, with no power cord. Specs and prices are maker-stated and were checked on October 7, 2026.
A rowing machine works your legs, hips, back and arms in one smooth, seated motion, and you set the effort yourself. Our exercise hub explains how cardio and strength work fit together for weight loss; this page is the dated shortlist of rowers. We research; we don’t test, and we have not rowed on these machines ourselves. The list mixes air, magnetic, water and connected rowers, because the right one depends on your space, your body and your budget.
The picks
On October 7, 2026 we searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall records for every brand on this list: Concept2, Sunny Health & Fitness, Merach, Aviron, Ergatta, Stamina, Echelon and Peloton. None has a rowing-machine recall. Peloton has had bike and treadmill recalls, and Stamina had a 1996 recall of a different exercise machine (details in the safety section). Specs come from each maker’s own product page on the same day.

Why these picks, and in this order
Our gear lists put safety first, then fit for the use case, then maker-stated specs against price, then warranty and returns, then data privacy for connected rowers. Ongoing costs count as part of the price, so a rower that needs a paid membership to work fully drops below one that doesn’t.
- Concept2 RowErg (1). It states the second-highest user limit here (500 lb), a 30-day money-back policy, a limited 2-year and 5-year warranty and free apps (ErgData plus more than 40 compatible apps). Its monitor runs on two D-cell batteries, so it needs no outlet. It is long, but it splits into two pieces on casters for storage.
- Sunny SF-RW5940SMART (2). Air and magnetic resistance together, a rail long enough for an inseam up to 44.9 inches, a free app and a 30-day money-back policy for about half the RowErg’s price.
- Merach Q1S (3) and Sunny SF-RW523021 (4). Both are quiet magnetic rowers that stand upright when you are done. The Merach is the cheapest and smallest, with a self-powered console; the Sunny has the longer frame warranty (3 years against 2).
- Aviron (5) and Ergatta Lite (6). Both turn rowing into games and races on a built-in screen, and neither requires a membership. Aviron states the highest limit on the list (507 lb) and a 30-day trial with no return fees; Ergatta uses real water resistance and states a 5-year warranty. They cost more, and the games need the membership.
- Merach NovaRow 950 (7) and Stamina X Air (8). The NovaRow pairs a water tank with magnetic levels in a folding wood-look frame. The Stamina is a simple folding air rower, but its 250 lb limit and 90-day parts cover put it lower.
- Echelon Row (9) and Peloton Row+ (10). Each suits people who want instructor-led classes. Monthly memberships, return fees and, for Peloton, the highest price put them last on our list, not because they are poor machines.
How much floor space each rower needs
Rowers are long. We multiplied each maker’s stated length by its width to show the floor area the machine covers while you row. Leave room around it to sit down and stand up: Concept2, for example, asks for a 9 x 4 foot space for its 96 x 24 inch RowErg.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Peloton All-Access (separate, for classes) | $44 USD |
| Echelon Premier | $39.99 USD |
| Ergatta (optional) | $39 USD |
| Aviron Family (optional, billed yearly) | $29 USD |
Echelon also sells Premier at $399.99 a year or $699.99 for two years; Ergatta's prepaid year works out to $32.50 a month. Concept2, Sunny, Merach and Stamina rowers need no paid app.
Source: Peloton, Echelon, Ergatta and Aviron product pages (checked on October 7, 2026)
Over two years, Peloton’s $44 monthly membership adds about $1,056 to the Row+, and Echelon’s monthly plan adds about $960 (or $699.99 if you prepay two years). Aviron and Ergatta say their memberships are recommended but not required, yet the games and classes that set them apart need one. Concept2’s free ErgData app and the free SunnyFit and Merach apps cover basic workouts and tracking at no monthly cost.
How hard rowing is, and what that means for weight loss
The 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities rates stationary rowing by power output. Moderate rowing under 100 watts is 5.0 METs, general vigorous rowing is 7.3, and 150 to 199 watts reaches 11.0 METs. Almost every rower on this list shows watts or pace on its monitor, so you can match a workout to a row in the chart and start where you are.
To turn a rowing session into calories for your body weight, use our calories burned calculator. For weight loss, a rower works best alongside a modest calorie deficit and strength training at least 2 days a week, on top of the 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week that the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans suggest. Our cardio vs strength training comparison explains what each one adds.
A simple first month on the rower
- Week 1Learn the stroke: legs, then body, then arms. Three sessions of 10 to 15 minutes at an easy pace.
- Week 2Four sessions of 15 to 20 minutes; keep the stroke rate low and smooth.
- Week 3Four sessions of 20 to 25 minutes; add a few one-minute harder pieces.
- Week 4Mix steady rows with one interval session, and keep two strength days.
How to choose between them
- User limit and leg length first. Pick a rower whose maker-stated limit comfortably exceeds your weight: 250 lb (Stamina X Air) to 507 lb (Aviron). If you are tall, check the rail or inseam figure: the Sunny SF-RW5940SMART states an inseam up to 44.9 inches, and Concept2 says an inseam of 38 inches or more may need its extra-long monorail.
- Air, magnetic or water. Air rowers (Concept2, Stamina) get harder the harder you pull and make a whooshing sound. Magnetic rowers (Sunny, Merach Q1S, Echelon, Peloton) are the quietest and use set levels. Water rowers (Ergatta, the NovaRow 950’s tank) give a sloshing sound and a smooth pull.
- Floor space and storage. Measure the room against the charts above, plus space to get on and off. If the rower will stand on end, check your ceiling height.
- Total cost. Add any membership for two or three years to the machine price before you compare.
- Warranty and returns. Concept2 states a 30-day money-back policy; Sunny states a 30-day money-back policy; Merach and Ergatta state 30 days; Aviron offers a 30-day trial with no restocking or return-shipping fees; Peloton offers a 30-day home trial minus a return fee; Echelon allows 60 days but charges $175 freight and a 10% restocking fee.

Safety: recalls and setup
We found no CPSC recall of a rowing machine from any brand on this list. The one recent rower recall we found belongs to a brand we left out:
- iFIT NordicTrack RW900 rowers, model NTRW19147 (October 16, 2025): about 44,800 units sold from November 2018 through April 2022 for about $1,700. The screen console can overheat and ignite; there were eight reports, including two fires and six of smoking or heat damage, and no injuries. Owners should stop using and unplug the rower and contact iFIT for a free replacement console installed at home.
- Peloton (not a rower): recalls of PR70P bike pedals (2020), Tread and Tread+ treadmills (2021), and seat posts on the Original Series Bike (2023) and Bike+ (2025). None names the Row+.
- Stamina (not a rower): a 1996 recall of about 21,500 PR-6050 exercise machines whose welds could crack, plus later recalls of an elliptical, inversion tables and mini-trampolines. None names a rower.
The NordicTrack rower recall in numbers
- 44,800NordicTrack NTRW19147 rowers recalled in the U.S. in October 2025CPSC
- 8incidents reported, including 2 firesCPSC
- $6,000at least this much property damage reportedCPSC
Checked on October 7, 2026
If you buy a used NordicTrack rower, check the model number on the decal on its base against the CPSC notice before you plug it in. For any rower, read the manual’s stroke guide, strap your feet in snugly, keep children and pets away from the flywheel and the moving seat, and start at a light setting. Air rowers need room around the fan; water rowers need their tank kept clean with the treatment the maker supplies.
If you have back, knee, heart or lung concerns, or you have been inactive for a long time, ask your clinician how hard and how long to row at first.
Privacy on connected rowers
Connected rowers and their apps can collect a lot about you. The Peloton Row+ has a movement-tracking camera for form feedback. Peloton’s privacy policy lists fitness data such as calories, distance and heart rate (if you consent), geolocation and physical movement among the data it collects, and says equipment cameras and microphones work only when you turn them on. It also says it shares data with advertising partners; you can opt out through its “Do Not Sell/Share My Personal Information” link and switch off activity-based marketing in your preferences. Read the policy for any app you sign up for and turn off sharing you don’t want. The Concept2, Sunny, Merach and Stamina rowers have their own monitors, so an app account is optional.
What a rower can’t do
A rower is a strong cardio tool, but it doesn’t replace strength training with real loads, and it won’t target fat in one area (no exercise does). It also only helps if it gets used: a machine you enjoy and keep in sight will do more than a pricier one folded away in a closet. The calorie number on any monitor is an estimate. To build strength between rows, pair it with adjustable dumbbells; to log workouts alongside steps, see our fitness trackers for weight loss or the best workout apps. Our gear hub has the rest of our home equipment guides, and our guide to maintaining weight loss explains why a regular activity habit matters after the weight comes off.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best rowing machine for home use?
For most people our top researched pick is the Concept2 RowErg: a 500 lb user limit, adjustable air resistance, a frame that splits in two for storage and no membership, at $990 to $1,155 (checked October 7, 2026). The best rower is the one you will use several times a week.
Is a rowing machine good for weight loss?
It can help. Rowing works large muscle groups, and the 2024 Adult Compendium rates it from 5.0 METs at a moderate effort to 11.0 METs or more at high power. Weight loss still depends mostly on a calorie deficit; regular rowing plus strength training supports it.
Air, magnetic or water: which rower resistance is best?
None is best for everyone. Air rowers get harder the harder you pull and are louder; magnetic rowers are the quietest and use set levels; water rowers give a smooth pull and a sloshing sound. Pick by noise, feel and space.
Do I need a membership for a rowing machine?
Not for most rowers on this list. Peloton sells its All-Access Membership separately at $44 a month for classes, and Echelon sells Premier at $39.99 a month. Aviron and Ergatta memberships are optional but unlock their games. Concept2, Sunny, Merach and Stamina rowers work with their own monitors and free apps.
Did InstaTuck test these rowers?
No. These are researched picks based on maker-stated limits, resistance, size, storage, warranties, returns, memberships and prices, plus CPSC recall searches, all checked on October 7, 2026.
