Best picks

10 exercise and yoga mats researched by use case: yoga, floor work, workouts in shoes and equipment, with maker-stated thickness, materials, warranties and recalls. Checked October 7, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Thin, firm mats of about 4 to 6 mm suit yoga and balance; 10 to 25 mm foam suits Pilates and floor work; large, firm mats and rubber-top tiles suit shoes, jumping and equipment.[9]
  • Natural rubber mats can contain latex proteins: JadeYoga and Hugger Mugger both tell people with a latex allergy to avoid their natural rubber mats.[13]
  • The Manduka PRO is the only yoga mat on this list with a named chemical certification (OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100); Manduka states it is latex-free PVC with a lifetime coverage.[1]
  • Mat workouts range from 1.8 METs for traditional mat Pilates to 7.5 METs for vigorous calisthenics such as burpees and jumping jacks.[18]

In short: For daily yoga, our top researched pick is the Manduka PRO Yoga Mat 6mm ($125 to $164): latex-free PVC certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, 26 inches wide, with a lifetime coverage. On a smaller budget, the Gaiam Premium Yoga Mat 6mm ($34.98 to $39.98) is also latex-free and carries Gaiam’s lifetime mat coverage. For home workouts in shoes, the Gorilla Mats Premium Large Exercise Mat (6 x 4 ft, $179.95) gives you 24 square feet of 1/4-inch mat with a lifetime warranty. Specs and prices are maker-stated and were checked on October 7, 2026.

A good mat makes floor work kinder to your knees, wrists and back, and that makes it easier to keep showing up. Our list of the best home workouts shows what you can do on one, and our exercise hub explains how movement fits into weight loss. This page is the dated shortlist of mats. We research; we don’t test, and we have not used these mats ourselves. The list mixes thin yoga mats, thick exercise mats, large workout mats and floor tiles for equipment, because the right mat depends on what you do on it.

The picks

On October 7, 2026 we searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall database for every brand on this list: Manduka, Gaiam, Gorilla Mats, ProsourceFit, JadeYoga, Rogue Fitness and Hugger Mugger. We found no recall of any mat from these brands. Rogue’s company has had three recalls of other gear (details in the safety section). Specs, materials and prices come from each maker’s own pages on the same day.

Why these picks, and in this order

Our gear lists put safety first, then fit for the use case, then maker-stated specs against price, then warranty and returns. For mats, “safety” is mostly about materials: whether the maker states the mat is latex-free, names a third-party chemical certification, and warns you clearly when a mat contains natural rubber. A mat that suits fewer people (for example, because of latex) sits lower even when it is well made.

  • Manduka PRO (1). It is the only yoga mat here with a named chemical certification (OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100), it is stated as latex-free, it comes in three lengths up to 85 inches, and it has a lifetime coverage. The closed-cell surface is meant to keep sweat out, which makes it easy to wipe clean.
  • Gaiam Premium (2). Latex-free, a lifetime mat coverage and a price under $40. It is narrower (24 inches) than the PRO, but for most beginners it covers the basics.
  • Gorilla Mats (3). The best fit on the list for workout videos, burpees and jumping, because the 6 x 4 foot surface gives you room to move and the maker says it is fine with shoes. It has a lifetime warranty and the longest return window here (60 days).
  • ProsourceFit Extra Thick (4). Up to 1 inch of foam for people whose knees or wrists hurt on thin mats, with a lifetime warranty against defects, at $30 to $40.
  • JadeYoga Harmony (5) and Hugger Mugger Para Rubber (10). Both are natural rubber mats that many people choose for grip. Both makers warn people with latex allergies to avoid them, which is why they are not higher. Jade states it is made in the United States and replaces mats with defects or premature wear for up to a year; the Hugger Mugger costs more and states no warranty term.
  • Rogue Individual Mat (6) and ProsourceFit Rubber Top tiles (7). Tougher, thicker options: a 3 x 6 foot vinyl mat for floor work, and interlocking tiles that protect your floor under dumbbells, a bench or a bike.
  • Manduka begin (8) and Gaiam Fitness 10mm (9). Light and low-cost. The begin mat weighs 2.5 lb and is latex-free TPE; the Gaiam Fitness Mat is the cheapest thick mat here at $24.98. Neither states a long warranty.

How thick a mat do you need?

Thickness is the spec people ask about most. Thin, firm mats (about 4 to 6 mm) keep you steady in standing and balance poses. Thick, soft foam (10 to 25 mm) cushions knees and spines during crunches, Pilates and stretching, but it can feel wobbly when you balance on one foot. Firm, mid-thickness workout mats and tiles (6 to 19 mm) handle shoes, jumping and equipment. The chart shows each maker’s stated thickness, converted to millimeters.

How much a mat workout does

The 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities rates the energy cost of common mat workouts in METs (1 MET is the energy you use sitting at rest). Gentle mat work is light, while vigorous bodyweight circuits are hard work. That is a good reason to pick the mat for the workout you will actually enjoy and repeat.

To estimate calories for a session, use our calories burned calculator. Mat work pairs well with strength training: bodyweight moves, resistance bands and adjustable dumbbells all fit on a large mat. How to choose between them

  1. Check the material first. If you or anyone in your home has a latex allergy, skip natural rubber mats (JadeYoga Harmony, Hugger Mugger Para Rubber, and others labeled “natural rubber”). The Manduka PRO and Gaiam Premium (PVC), the Manduka begin (TPE) and the Gaiam and ProsourceFit foam mats (NBR) are not natural rubber; Manduka and Gaiam state theirs are latex-free.
  2. Pick a thickness for the workout. Use the steps above: firm and thin for balance, soft and thick for floor work, large and firm for shoes and jumping, tiles for equipment.
  3. Measure yourself and your space. If you are tall, look for a mat at least as long as you are (the Manduka PRO comes in 85 inches; JadeYoga sells a 74-inch Harmony and an 80-inch XW). Measure the floor before buying a 6 x 4 foot mat or a tile set.
  4. Compare warranty and returns. Manduka (PRO), Gaiam (Premium), Gorilla Mats and ProsourceFit state lifetime coverage for defects. Gorilla Mats allows returns within 60 days; Manduka, Gaiam, ProsourceFit, JadeYoga and Hugger Mugger take returns within 30 days, and most of them only for unused items.
  5. Think about carrying and storage. A 2.5 lb mat is easy to take to class; a 7.5 lb PRO or a set of tiles is better left at home.

Safety: materials, recalls and setup

Recalls. We found no CPSC recall of a yoga or exercise mat from any brand on this list. Coulter Ventures, the company behind Rogue Fitness, has had three recalls of other products: Rogue Home Timers (November 4, 2020; about 8,900 units; the lithium-ion battery could overheat; full refund), MobilityWOD door anchors (June 16, 2015; about 875 units; the strap could pull out; full credit or refund) and barbell brackets (April 12, 2011; about 5,500 units; the weld could break; free replacement). None of them involves a mat.

Materials and smell. Many mats are made of PVC, foam or rubber, and some smell when new. Gaiam says its printed mats release a strong but harmless odor and suggests airing them out for 2 to 3 days; Gorilla Mats says a faint smell clears within a day. Manduka states its PRO series is certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, a test for harmful substances, and Rogue states its vinyl mat is lead, BPA and phthalate free. Keep mats out of strong sun: JadeYoga says its natural rubber mats should not be exposed to sunlight, and Gaiam says long sun exposure can make its PVC mats fade and turn brittle.

Setup. Lay the mat on a clean, dry floor, flatten curled corners before you start, and replace a mat that tears or turns slippery. Thick foam can make balance poses harder, so use a firm mat for standing work. If you have a joint, heart or balance condition, or have been inactive for a while, ask your clinician which moves are safe to start with.

What a mat can’t do

A mat is a place to work out, not a workout. It won’t burn calories by itself, and a pricier mat won’t make you lose weight faster. What helps is regular movement you enjoy, a modest calorie deficit and strength work at least twice a week. Our list of the best exercises for weight loss is a good place to start, and if you want cardio at home too, see the best exercise bikes and best walking pads. Questions to ask a professional

  • Which floor exercises are safe for my knees, hips or back right now?
  • Would a thicker mat help my joints, or make balance harder for me?
  • I have a latex allergy: which mat materials should I avoid?
  • How many days a week should I do strength or mat work to start?

Frequently asked questions

What is the best exercise mat for home workouts?

For yoga, our top researched pick is the Manduka PRO 6mm ($125 to $164), which is latex-free and has a lifetime coverage. For workout videos, HIIT and training in shoes, the 6 x 4 ft Gorilla Mats Premium Large Exercise Mat ($179.95) gives you more room. Prices were checked on October 7, 2026.

What is the best yoga mat for beginners?

A firm, latex-free mat of about 5 to 6 mm suits most beginners. On a budget, the Gaiam Premium 6mm ($34.98 to $39.98) has a lifetime mat coverage; if you carry your mat to class, the 2.5 lb Manduka begin 5mm ($50 to $62) is the lightest pick.

Is a thicker mat better?

Not always. Thick foam (10 to 25 mm) is kinder to knees and spines during floor work, but it can feel wobbly in standing and balance poses. Many people use a firm yoga mat and fold a towel or add a thicker mat under their knees when needed.

Can I use a yoga mat if I have a latex allergy?

Yes, if it is not made from natural rubber. Manduka and Gaiam state their PVC and TPE mats on this list are latex-free. JadeYoga and Hugger Mugger tell people with latex allergies to avoid their natural rubber mats. If you have a severe allergy, ask your allergist.

Did InstaTuck test these mats?

No. These are researched picks based on maker-stated thickness, size, materials, warranties, returns and prices, plus CPSC recall searches, all checked on October 7, 2026.
